I work for an independent children's bookstore in Chicago, and on behalf of hundreds of customers who have discovered or deepened their appreciation of J.R.R. Tolkien's books via Peter Jackson's films, I ask that New Line Cinema and MGM/UA work together to make THE HOBBIT onscreen a reality.

I have seen first hand the impact that these films have made on children's imaginations and their interest in quality literature.  Many parents have told me that going to see Mr. Jackson's films each year has become an important family ritual that will be missed in the future.  These comments have come from families in affluent areas of Chicago and the surrounding suburbs, as well as middle class and inner city neighborhoods.  I believe this response is emblematic of the millions of people -- of all ages from all over the world -- who would welcome an agreement between New Line and MGM/UA to secure THE HOBBIT film rights for Peter Jackson.

In the spirit of this kind of generous cooperation, I know I would go out of my way to support new MGM/UA releases in addition to New Line films and THE HOBBIT.

To paraphrase the playwright Tom Stoppard, "Sometimes when you get things in the right order, you can nudge the world."  New Line and MGM/UA are in a position to do just that -- certainly in terms of cinema and literacy.  I thank you for your efforts, and feel hopeful that an arrangement can be reached that will benefit everyone.
